The actual number of closures is therefore significantly higher. <\/p>\n<p>Particularly alarming: For the first time, the total number of brick-and-mortar stores could <strong>fall below 300,000<\/strong> \u2014specifically to about 296,600. Ten years ago, that number was still around 367,000. This means that roughly <strong>one in five retail locations<\/strong> has <strong>disappeared<\/strong> within a decade.  <\/p>\n<p>For years, Germany has been losing at least 4,500 stores annually\u2014and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number rose to more than 11,000.<\/p>\n<h2>Causes: Succession issues, bankruptcies, and a lack of prospects<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gfl-broker.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pexels-clothes-1839935_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The Decline of Retail: More and More Stores Are Closing\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gfl-broker.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pexels-clothes-1839935_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gfl-broker.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pexels-clothes-1839935_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There are many reasons for the decline of brick-and-mortar stores:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lack of Succession Plans<\/strong> for Owner-Managed Businesses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Declining profitability<\/strong> and an uncertain future<\/li>\n<li><strong>A rise in bankruptcies<\/strong>, particularly among small businesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A study by Creditreform shows that business insolvencies rose significantly in 2025. The sectors hardest hit were micro-enterprises, the manufacturing sector, and the retail sector. In the retail sector alone, insolvencies rose by more than 10 percent.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianz-trade.de\/presse\/pressemitteilungen\/einzelhandel-insolvenzen-in-deutschland-steigen-weiter-an.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allianz Trade<\/a> also confirms this trend: Between August 2024 and August 2025, <strong>2,490 retail bankruptcies<\/strong> were recorded\u2014just slightly below the nine-year high.<\/p>\n<h2>Sluggish consumer spending is putting additional strain on the retail sector<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to structural problems, the retail sector is suffering greatly from weak demand. Consumer sentiment remains subdued\u2014and a quick recovery is not in sight. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8582\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gfl-broker.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gonghuimin468-happy-holidays-3040029_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Consumer confidence will decline in 2026\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gfl-broker.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gonghuimin468-happy-holidays-3040029_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gfl-broker.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gonghuimin468-happy-holidays-3040029_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The economic conditions speak for themselves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to forecasts, the inflation rate is expected to be <strong>2.8%<\/strong> in 2026<\/li>\n<li>A further increase to <strong>2.9%<\/strong> is expected in 2027<\/li>\n<li>Higher prices are significantly curbing private consumption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The current trend is particularly concerning, as consumers\u2019 income expectations are falling significantly, while at the same time about 60 percent of Germans expect energy prices to remain high in the long term. Added to this are global crises and geopolitical conflicts, which are further exacerbating general uncertainty and having an additional negative impact on consumer behavior. <\/p>\n<h2>City Centers in Transition: Vacancy Rates Are Rising<\/h2>\n<p>The consequences of this trend are plain to see in German city centers.
